The Hope of Something Absent

Like a word on the tip of my tongue
Or a memory so close to remembered
Breath through my lips
And fog through the branches
Slipping past without a word
Inconsiderate, I'm inconsolable
Sometimes death comes before life
Like smoke before a flame
You're gone now
Before I met you
Before I loved you
But oh, how I loved you
Desperate thoughts
Of a desperate woman
Clinging to things unknown
The fear of the chill
In your all consuming absence
Is all that I understand
For what has happened
Never happened
And who you are
Never existed
So I'll close my eyes
So quietly
So softly
And hope to see you again

That Which Love Can't Conquer

As I hold your hand I know for sure
Things will never change
After tonight time will stop
All life will cease to grow
No more chirps at morning light
No more hugs from sullen friends
As your heart beats its final rhythm
The hands on clocks will freeze
My eyes will dry
My head will drop
The world, in all its sad beauty
Will cease its incessant rotation
Plates will shift and pull apart
The planets will split to pieces
Will I exist?
Or disappear?
Who knows?
It doesn’t matter.
Without your feet
To keep me planted
Your wings to help me fly
Without your eyes
To help me see
Or your arms to hold me still
All life will cease to grow I know
So love doesn’t conquer all.

Silver Moon Man

With a kiss she bid the moon goodbye
Brushed her hand across his brow
Silver traces upon her lips
Reveal the unspoken truth
Time is up once again
He must return to the stars
She sits and weeps
As he rises up
Her eyes on him
His eyes on her
A promise lingers
Like sweet smelling winds
A curse
A spell
Regardless of it's cause
It lingers for eternity
One night
Each cycle
They lay beneath the endless dark sky
& feel the silence of their two souls as one

Time Across the Blackbird's Wings

All but the last few lines of this poem were written on the eve of my 21st birthday.

Another day
Another year
Life is passing by
Spreading like the winds of time
Across the blackbird's wings
True to form, it tip toes past
Careful not to wake you
A dream that lasts a hundred years
Then leaves you in the dark
Grasp at feathers slick and frail
Slipping through your fingers
The ones with wings
Must fly, must try
To out soar the winds of time

Clarity in Chaos

A piece falls into place
A heart beats a little faster
Eyes linger
And breath catches
I've met you once
In a crowded place
Filled with strangers
Just like us
Who would have thought
The fairy tales told truths?
A minute disguised as a second
We disappear to a world our own
Only you and I
If only you and I
Lost in time
And lost in truth
Where I end
And where you begin
We'll never know
From this moment on
Clarity in a mass of chaos
That's what this is
The climax of the story
The edge of the cliff
Call it what you want
There's no stopping now
No beginning
No end
We've found our forever

How to Love

Like all the pretty romance novels
I thought that I could change him
He would be the hero
& I would be his heroin
I'd save him from himself
Teach him how to love
I'd be the one that he would run to
The one to hold his heart
Epic were my plans
Deflated was reality
Nothing is how it should be
No matter what the cost
To teach a boy to love
Is a risk that so few take
I guess I cowered from the chance
That his bite was as bad as his bark
One word and I would have risen
Taken up the challenge
As flowers wilt in heat
A heart withdraws from indifference
To say I was in love
Perhaps would be a lie
But to say that I was willing
Is to speak soft words of truth
It's grand to keep on wishing
Even in the dark
But to hold that candle up at night
Is the worst kind of denial

Clawing Rivers

I came across this beautiful image titled The Riverbank 8, and it inspired me to write this poem. So thank you Crinklechip for your beautiful work.

She holds her head up high
For fear of falling down
The water waits
With it's fingers clawing
Begging for her grace
She almost cries out
But dares not to
For she never knows whose listening
The angry ants
Or crying birds
They wait for her to fall
So out it comes
Her longing laugh
That smile can work wonders
Her moment of vulnerability gone
Replaced by such an act
Never will they see her worry
Or ever even doubt
For she knows that she will rise above
To concur all her foes
